TK-003 - Teak Material Study

What you should know: Teak is a pretty magical wood.

We decided to highlight Teak because it’s a hardwood that is commonly recognizable, yet few people truly understand what makes it such a beautiful product of nature.

Teak is found in Asia, primarily Myanmar and Northern Thailand, yet it has been relied upon across the world for thousands of years, simply due its incredible natural properties . The pronounced features of Teak is that it offers the superior rot-resistance of any wood in the world. This is caused by a natural resin that permeates the wood, a natural oil similar to rubber. This rubber also reinforces the durability of the wood while most beautifully, the sanded surface takes takes on a polished sheen without any applying any finish. We also learned that it is really good at dulling carbide router bits fast!

We also never knew that Teak darkens as it ages. I’ll often look at one of the Kiwis we use on a daily basis and recall how each of the nicks and scuffs got there. Anyone that owns a favorite pair of sneakers knows that every scratch and nick tells a story. We often appreciate seeing the ways in which our Kiwis evolve out in the wild and most poetically, teak offers a literal transformation that only the user gets to share.

We proudly consider ourselves Material Science geeks, and if you or someone you know obsesses over the surfaces and finishes of the world around us, this is the knife for you.
